Freedom Journeys: United States Colored Troops and African American Identity in the Post-Civil War Era

Many Black families are exploring their genealogies and discovering that they had an ancestor who served in the United States Colored Troops. Our featured scholar Dean Harry Bradshaw Matthews, Founder and President  of the United States Colored Troops Institute of Hartwick College, New York, will speak on how serving in the USCT changed the lives and outlooks of African American men and how USCT veterans helped shape discussions of African American identity in the crucial decade of the 1890’s when the debate between Washington and W.E.B. Dubois was heating up.
